Medium-density fibreboard ( MDF ) is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. It is made up of separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood. Plywood is a manufactured wood panel made from sheets of veneer (thin sheets of wood glued together). It differs from chipboard in that the bonding of the wood fibres requires no additional materials, although resin is often added. Hardboard is produced in either a wet or dry process. Plywood consists of three or more layers of veneer, each glued with its grain at right angles to adjacent layers for strength. Melamine can be easily moulded while warm but will set into a fixed form, which makes it suitable for certain industrial applications.
