In former years a signal cannon was fired from the crest of the Tygerberg to signal the arrival of vessels in the harbour, informing farmers of the potential to sell their produce to the new arrivals. The Tygerberg is now home to a 60 ha reserve conserving indigenous plants and a number of small animals. The reserve is open to the public and offers gentle hikes through the reserve from where the views of Cape Town are unsurpassed.
