In celebration of Thrasher Magazine’s indisputable heritage and reputation in skateboarding, Vans commemorates the ubiquitous Thrasher flame logo, originally released in 1981, to present a full line of apparel, accessories and footwear this fall. Breathable tongue, collar and quarter panel vents for increased air flow. The guys spent a day cruising together, starting up on the slopes of Table Mountain and ending up at Civic Centre in the heart of downtown. Steven was asked to pilot the Benny Gold plane with a reinterpretation of some of their most popular items and he flew them straight into an alternate universe soaked in psychedelic sunshine. We are especially thrilled with this collection because we are longtime fans of Steven's work. This is a very limited release and certainly one not to be missed! Check out the collection on our online store here. The original plan was to screen South and Beyond at Yourstruly but things didn't work out and Baseline was more than happy to help. So Friday the 21st came around and we converted the store into a cinema for the night, luckily Justin Leslie was there to document it, the photos below are what followed. They sent a host of team riders from Europe and the US on a few tours and the resulting coverage is a special zine project called 'The Relay', as well as some video coverage by the same title, you can find part one here and part two here. We caught up with French Cons and Polar Skate Co team rider Paul Grund to find out more. What was your favourite place to visit during the mission? There is a good vibe around all of us, Kenny is sick to skate with cause he's always hyped and David because he's hilarious! It's hard to answer this question, at home you have time to focus on something but it's always the same spots, whereas when you are on trips there's new spots and you have to be more spontaneous. How much time do you actually get to spend back in Bordeaux and what is the skate scene like there? The French Converse crew seem to get as much coverage (if not more) than most of the global crew. You were just over in Sweden too, and you were there for quite a few weeks, any specific projects in the works that you can tell us about? The House of Vans is where creative expression lives. It’s a place where imagination lets loose over skate obstacles, art installations, workshops and concert stages, inspiring every person who runs, rolls, or stomps through its door. Vans continues its enduring commitment to creativity and the support of the skate community through the House of Vans at 94 Juta Street, Braamfontein. The pop-up location showcases three days and nights of music, photography, art and skateboarding. The Vans x Baseline Pro-Classic skate event introduces a skate obstacle that pays tribute to one of Johannesburg’s iconic street skate spots. Baseline Skate Shop, whilst being the epicentre of skateboarding in Cape Town, holds strong roots to the Johannesburg scene.
