Climate Namibia is the most arid country in Southern Africa and has a dry climate typical of a semi-desert country.  Summer months occur from October to April and winter months from May to September.  Rainfall generally occurs from the months of November to March and is normally of short duration.  Days are generally warm to very hot throughout the year.  Winter nights can be very cold to freezing particularly in the Southern Region.  It is advisable for tourists to pack clothing for both warm and cold weather and exercise caution when out in the sun. Average summer temperatures range from 20 deg C to 35 deg C during the day.  However temperatures above 40 deg C are often recorded in the Southern Region and extreme North of the country.  Average winter temperatures range from 18 deg C to 24 deg C during the day whilst night temperatures drop to freezing.

Communication Tourists can travel with mobile devices and access the GSM network at all major towns as well as on most portions of the national highway.  International roaming agreements are in place with more than 220 networks from over 100 countries.  An increasing number of accommodation establishments offer WI-FI and most towns have internet cafes.  For self-drive tourists that wish to travel to remote areas the hiring of a satellite phone is highly recommended. When dialing internationally from Namibia via mobile devices a + followed by the relevant country code, area code and number is to be dialed.  When dialing internationally from Namibia via a fixed landline the international access code is 00.  When dialing internationally to Namibia the country code is 264 followed by the area code and number.

Credit Cards & Currency The currency in Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (N$) which is linked to the South African Rand and is equal to it. These are the only two currencies accepted in Namibia, however the Namibian Dollar is not accepted in South Africa. Foreign currencies and traveler’s cheques can be exchanged upon arrival at the international airport Hosea Kutako or at the numerous foreign exchange bureaus which are available in all major towns throughout Namibia.  It is advisable for self-drive tourists to carry some cash for remote areas and to pay for all fuel expenses. All major credit cards are generally accepted. Namibia has a good network of ATM’s facilities available for drawing cash.
