Our competition team is very successful and we have a great number of students with Provincial and National Colours for Jiu-Jitsu. The Combat Jiu-Jitsu Academy (CJA) is run by Mike Herbig – 6th Dan Jiu-Jitsu Instructor and is affiliated to the South African Jiu-Jitsu Council (SAJJC), SAGA (South African Grappling Association) and the NMA / ISKA.
The training is based on the very best that the fighting arts have to offer.

The second term is wrapping up to a close, and with it, comes the cold Cape Town Winter! At CJA, we teach our students life skills, and effective self-defense, in a safe, controlled environment! Our program aims to develop vital skills, such as: endurance, flexibility, core strength, balance, co-ordination, and agility. With over 35 years of experience, most of them teaching kids, Mike is an acknowledged expert in jiu-jitsu, teaching children and producing champions in competition. His instructor corps is made up of students, all who have been training with him since they were 5 years old! Mike started his own training at age of 16 with traditional Goju-Ryu karate. After 10 years he became disillusioned with the lack of a complete fighting approach and outdated teaching methodologies found in the karate systems. Co-forming the Kyokan Martial Arts School, he then spent the next 10 years searching the world of martial arts to find out what REALLY worked in terms of the combat. His search also included psychologists and teachers to further refine the ability to teach children. In 2000 he founded the Combat Jiu-Jitsu Academy to continue his pursuit of the truth in martial arts, life and refining the specialized skill of teaching children. In 2001 he fought in the United Nations of Jiu-Jitsu Competition, dominating the open grappling division to take the Gold Medal. Retired from active competition he now focuses on training the next generation of fighters and instructors. As Chief Instructor of CJA, his passion is the development of young leaders. His Instructor Team is a source of pride and joy and growing and developing them to be the best version of themselves is his main focus! Looking to develop Jiu-Jitsu as a national sport he will always seek to create a better way. Finishing his Matric in 2013, he left school and immediately started following his passion and became spent a full time CJA instructor. Passionate about teaching, loved by students and parents alike, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with the students and watching them grow.
