The Association is an official group of the South African Medical Association and our aims and objectives include: promoting the science and practice of surgery.

Dr Ignatius Botha obtained his surgical degree in 1991 and was a consultant at the University of Stellenbosch in the Surgical Department as well as The Gastroenterology Department. His main interest is in laparoscopic surgery and he has done numerous courses in advanced laparoscopic surgery (aka keyhole surgery) and training of fellow surgeons. Gastroenterology forms a main part of his day-to-day practice. He is also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. His other main interest lies in the Intensive Care field, surgical infections, antimicrobial prophylaxis and antibiotics. He is actively involved in an Antibiotic Review Group (ARG) with specialists re-evaluating the use of antibiotics in the Intensive Care situation as well as discussions in surgical anti-microbial prophylaxis. The Antibiotic Review Group was formed more than 10 years ago and is very well established. Meetings include patient presentations, ward rounds and visits by local and international speakers. He is currently a consultant surgeon at a private clinic in Cape Town. In 1980 he did locums for a few months and worked as a medical officer at Duff Scott Memorial Hospital in Stilfontein. In 1987 he became restless with the general practice and accepted a Registrar position in Cardio-Thoracic surgery at the University of the Orange Free-State. He eventually decided that open heart surgery was not for him and changed direction to general surgery at Stellenbosch University where he obtained his M.Med. Dr Botha stayed on at Tygerberg hospital as a consultant for a while before he started his own at practice at Panorama Medi-Clinic in 1992 and has been there ever since. The accreditation was done by the number of cases we did and by experience. During the 1st few years many surgeons assisted each other and did workshops to train other surgeons eventually. He is currently taking care of patients with laparoscopic or open surgery with severe intra-abdominal sepsis. Antibiotics, Antimicrobial prophylaxis and Surgical infections remains a debatable platform from where Surgeons, Physicians, Microbiologists and Intensive Care interested people come together to discuss and to improve the outcome of severely ill patients. Dr Botha has a special interest in this topic and is actively involved in the treatment of severely ill patients. Dr Ignatius Botha specializes in Laparoscopic Surgery (aka Keyhole Surgery) in Cape Town; also Open Surgery and certain areas of Surgical Oncology. Two highly qualified people are employed as my Personal Administrative Assistants. Chanel Evans joined as an personal assistant and covers the reception, booking of operating room cases and dealing with all patients arriving at the practice. Both these ladies can and will assist in any way to make your stay with us as pleasant as possible. Since its inception the hospital has been a huge success due to its carefully planned design, sophisticated equipment and facilities, its professional and dedicated staff and management and leading medical professionals. In 1995 Mediclinic Panorama opened two world-class special units, the Heart Unit and Oncology Unit, both of which have been a resounding success.
