Michael Elliot is a specialist surgical gastroenterologist, specialising in diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. Dr. Elliot has been in private practice for the last 26 years. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, studied medicine at St Bartholomews Hospital University of London, England and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. He obtained his specialist post-graduate colorectal training at St Marks Hospital for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum at the University of London, England and he was on the staff there for two years, first as a research fellow, then as a senior surgical registrar. He was Senior Surgical Registrar to Sir Ian Todd P.R.C.S. at St Bartholomews Hospital, London for a period of three years, specialising purely in colorectal surgery. He is first author of forty-six original surgical publications and co-author of over seventy surgical publications. Dr. Elliot is one of the co-founders of the Gastrointestinal Unit (G.I.T ward) at the Kingsbury Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Michael Elliot's clinical involvement in colorectal diseases covers the spectrum, from chronic constipation and diarrhoea, anorectal problems and diverticulitis, to faecal and urinary incontinence, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal polyps. His specific interests also extend to colorectal cancer, not only the primary treatment of the disease, but also the management of unusual cancer related problems and recurrent cancer. He brings a unique and very substantial experience in some highly complex areas, including the avoidance of colostomies in the treatment of rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He pioneered the development of colonoscopy in private practice. Dr. Elliot also pioneered the ileal pouch and colonic pouch anastomotic procedures, both at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town as well as in private practise. His extensive consulting rooms offers a range of diagnostic tests to evaluate patients with symptomatic disorders of defaecation, including diarrhoea, constipation or incontinence. The examination rooms offers Endoscopy, Anorectal physiological studies and anorectal ultrasound and other tests to help determine which patients would benefit from medications, or alternatively advanced minimally invasive procedures to reconstruct the sphincter muscles and perineal floor. In summary, he offers the most up to date investigatory equipment and surgical techniques to preserve intestinal continence and thus avoid the formation of an external stoma.
