ESI is a Durban, South Africa based company that operates in all major centres including Cape Town, Johannesburg and anywhere in between! We design and implement contaminated soil remediation projects suited to your legislative or Risk Based cleanup drivers. Soil remediation of hydrocarbons by in-situ flushing, or ex-situ via washing or enhanced bio-remediation. Emergency response including use as a fire-fighting wetting agent at spill-sites to reduce explosive risk. Propriety and innovative catalytic chemistry is utilised to significantly increase the efficacy and cost effectiveness of hydroxide-chemical-oxidation of various contaminants in soils and groundwater. In-situ chemical oxidation to remediation hydrocarbons (petroleum and chlorinated) in soils and groundwater. ESI prides itself on being a leader in providing site investigation and remediation solutions in accordance with locally (where available) and internationally recognized standards. Our experience shows that obtaining strongly defensible data reduces increased long term project costs associated with re-sampling, as well as incorrect design and implementation of remedial systems. South Africa currently has only limited regulatory guidance on adequate, repeatable and defensible methodology for conducting contaminated site investigations. The Water Research Commission (WRC) has developed and made available publicly suitable guidance on groundwater sampling in South Africa which includes sampling for contaminated site investigation. ESI is proud to offer groundwater sampling services in accordance with this guidance. However, this guidance is designed with deeper production borehole drilling in mind and is not wholly suitable for contaminated site investigation. Production boreholes are normally drilled deeper than environmental monitoring boreholes/wells and designed to provide a suitable volume of groundwater as a water supply source for farms or rural communities. Environmental sampling boreholes are drilled with a strong emphasis on obtaining high integrity geological samples while negating the linking or cross contamination of different zones of the aquifer. These are not normally considerations when drilling production boreholes. ESI has designed and continues to refine its drilling, monitoring well installation and sampling methodology based on a number of recognised sources including the International Standards Organisation (ISO), the ASTM, and the US EPA. We have also worked together with multi-national clients who have developed their own in-house standards for site investigation including Chevron and BP. ESI’s Geoprobe 54DT is tracked and self-propelled, weighs 1.5 tons, and has a footprint of 2.8 x 1.2 m, capable of working in areas not accessible to many other drill rigs. The steel bore rods can also be equipped with a variety of electronic probes that provide continuous in-situ measurements of subsurface properties such as geotechnical characteristics (penetrometer testing) and contaminant distribution (eg. Accurate Groundwater Profiling: Direct Push drilling affords the capability of collecting depth-discrete groundwater samples to locate contaminated layers. Sample Quality: Soil samples retrieved in plastic liners for volatile organics are not exposed to the atmosphere prior to dispatch the laboratory. Cleanliness: No water or drilling muds are introduced during direct push boring. Rate of Work: Direct push boring can provide data at a faster rate than conventional drilling when a greater data density is required. Reduced Drill Spoil: Dual-tube sampling produces a significantly smaller volume of drill spoil requiring safe disposal adding to project costs.
