Kabelo's rough designs showed promise, and recognising his talent, we sponsored his two year fashion design course at Linea Academy. Rural communities like those around the remote Lubombo area in northern KwaZulu-Natal are often overlooked when it comes to CSR. For this reason, and the high unemployment rate (around 80%), we decided in 2005 to contribute financially to their efforts to rebuild and repair their churches/community centres. Youth from the community were taught basic skills such as brick-making and brick-laying, making it possible for them to be involved in the construction process. Second hand sewing machines were donated to the group so that they could start with their sewing projects. When Leon was asked to address 600 unemployed students at the YWAM Life Changers Academy, on how to make people more employable to the small business sector, part of his session involved teaching students how to write a proposal. The students had to write a proposal to a company that was willing to sponsor their tertiary education, amongst other outlining what they would study, why this was a skill SA needed, and why they should be considered for the prize.
