Security Services in Cape Town, Educational Institution in Cape Town, Education Institute in Cape Town

The GSCID seeks to create a partnership between UCT, and the City of Cape Town, the Groote Schuur Community, to improve and upgrade the public environment for the benefit of all.

Reducing crime generally in the area including drug dealing and prostitution. Keeping the streets, pavements and public spaces clean and tidy. At the heart of UCT’s mission is the desire to contribute significantly to society through high quality research, inspired teaching and learning and the development of outstanding graduates, underpinning global efforts to understand our natural and social worlds. We also want to contribute directly to local communities through the education we offer to their children, as a significant employer and through social outreach activities. The University of Cape Town’s teaching and research facilities cover a significant footprint within this community. Our staff and students live here and contribute in diverse ways to the economy of this area. While UCT brings great value to the areas surrounding the university, we acknowledge that we also contribute to some of the challenges. We want to be a good corporate neighbour and encourage our students to be good citizens of this area. We want to contribute towards a precinct which is safer, cleaner and more enjoyable for residents, businesses and visitors alike. We want to facilitate urban renewal along the Main Road business districts through appropriate re-development opportunities. A Heritage Area is an area of special historic and cultural significance in which the character and quality of the environment is protected by legislation. Areas are designated as Heritage Areas on the basis of the quality of the concentration or extent of groupings of cultural heritage resources, an extensive landscape resource or place or an agglomeration of buildings. The following heritage advice pamphlets advise on the care designers need to take when planning new developments or alterations to properties within heritage areas, as well as to historic buildings outside of heritage areas. Examining the level of education amongst the residents of this area as well as looking at the amount of land parcels occupied for this specific land use reveal the significant impact of this rich educational presence on the urban environment. A land use analysis of the broader area indicates the strong educational presence once again. UCT, with its associated campuses, sport fields and residences, is the main tertiary institution in the area. The main schools in the area include Rustenburg High School for Girls, Sans Souci Girls High School, South African College High School (Sacs) and Westerford High School. An additional number of primary and pre-primary schools are evident throughout the study area. A total of 8% of land area (sqm) of the broader GSCID area is currently occupied for educational purposes, which is quite high considering that only 11% is residential and 53% commercial in nature. In terms of the GSCID, the presence of this university and other educational facilities ranging from pre-schools to other tertiary facilities are significant in defining the sense of place for the surrounding urban environment.
