What you should know about Jill Trappler
Jill Trappler has worked as an artists and craft person in various projects over the past thirty years. Jill served on the Board of the Ava gallery and the NAC. Jill established the Philani weaving project and the Intle cooperative project in Site B and Philippi; the Philani clinic in Khayelitsha has a sustainable weaving project. The art studio initiative at Valkenberg grew out of workshops coordinated at the hospital. (This project started as an Outreach initiative of the AVA gallery) She has worked as an unqualified OT at Baragwaneth (1976/77) and at Groot Schuur OT department as a part time lecturer. She exhibits regularly in group shows nationally and abroad. Her solo exhibitions are numerous and continue to be a priority in her practice. The combinations of project work, teaching and personal practice has a significant impact. Interactive, exchanging skills and ideas with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences plus daily involvement in making art/craft push the levels of creative life style, education and product development. Apprentice in various craft studios, including weaving, ceramics, dying, spinning, knitting, fabric painting/printing, embroidery, sewing, beading. Nature is called forth as distinct from being mirrored. After all, the mind may well be an expression of culture but the brain, where the mind is said to reside, is very much an artifact of nature. Please see the exhibition project and join in; it will be full of surprises. In December we will look at all the work, make changes if necessary and select work for an exhibition at Art Sauce studio in Town. (2) Studio work will include working in the art sauce studio. ( you need to take all your work and all your materials and tools away; no storage.) The shop will be open; they provide all the essential materials. There is limited parking inside but parking in the area is available and safe. You can drop you materials and work and then find parking. There is a gallery space and other studios with students busy with various projects and practises. An interactive environment where exchange can take place freely and with consideration for the work is invaluable. The plan is for us to work together in a quiet place without distraction and expectation so that the making of images, in whatever medium is of primary concern.
