Mary van Apeldoorn founded her company in 1986, after relocating from Johannesburg where she had been a senior executive in executive and interim management placement, with her own specialisation being in credit, finance and accounting. Initially started as a one-woman business, Mary van Apeldoorn and Associates has now grown to be one of the most respected resource companies in the region. Mary is the strategic head and public face of the company. Her business acumen and experience have honored her with roles such as Vice President of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (First female in 200 years); APSO; Chairman of the Western Cape chapter of the Business Woman’s Association, Fellow of the Institute of Directors, and as an accredited International Consultant. Her roles within credit management, her specialty, led to her being past President of the Institute of Credit Management. She currently serves as a Board Member of Woman Zone. Using a comprehensive computerised database started in 1988, all candidates are interviewed by one member of the specialist recruitment team, with work starting daily from 06h30 for candidates who cannot attend interviews during normal working hours. Interviewing techniques are competency-based, whereby the system identifies the essential competencies of the applicant, with these being matched to an agreed job specification and individual profile developed with the client. The specification process involves obtaining a completed picture of the position on offer, based on job description, observations of management, incumbents, persons dealing with the position, and any other stakeholders interacting with the position. Curriculum vitaes and references are diligently and thoroughly checked and confirmed. Credit, criminal and educational checks are made, and other tests undertaken, where deemed appropriate and agreed with the client. Based on this information a CV is made out for the applicant in an individual structured style that assists in the evaluation of applicants to the agreed client’s needs. This is presented to the client in a professional and confidential manner.
