The DHET was created in 2009, in order to advance the national vision of a coherent, comprehensive and differentiated post-school system. The DHET will achieve its mandate by effectively planning, regulating, resourcing and co-ordinating the provision of post-school education and vocational training opportunities especially for our country’s youth. The imminent promulgation of the TVET Colleges Amendment Bill brings about a shift of functions related to the administration of TVET Colleges from the provinces to the Minister of Higher Education and Training. This function shift enables the DHET to realise the creation of a coherent post-school system and thereby comprehensively address the skills supply challenges. The performance of the Colleges in the next five years will be guided by the targets established in the Minister’s Delivery Agreement. The Delivery Agreement is guided by Outcome 5 of the government’s Programme of Action: A skilled and capable workforce to support an inclusive growth path. Committed to affordability and accessibility for all learners. To provide relevant, accredited Education and Training which will address the Skills and Developmental needs of clients. Professional and confidential Counselling and Psychological Services are provided for Personal, Social, Family or any other psycho-social related challenges. The Unit provides awareness workshops to students regarding At Risk Behaviour such as negative Peer Pressure, Substance Abuse and Poor Decision Making Skills. Other services include Trauma Debriefing, Crisis Intervention and the promotion of General Well-being of students. This well equipped units offer Valuable Academic Support and Training to enable students to succeed. Workshops equip students with vital skills to facilitate Academic and Personal development. Soccer, Rugby, Athletics, Cricket, Netball, Cycling and table tennis are part of the social and club sports offered. Events are selected to create an awareness of wellness around Cultural Inclusivity and the development of Talent. The aim and scope of academic support is to assist students academically by providing an array of quality learning support programmes in the form of group work, workshops and individual learning interventions. To assist students to gain an understanding of their individual style of learning. To equip students with skills for cognitive development and critical thinking. To prepare students for exams and equip them with coping skills. To equip students with helpful tools and skills for effective studying. To help students to gain a better understanding of their individual time management style and time management skills. This is a range of workshops to equip students with employability skills to access the Open Labour Market. This is a classroom curriculum designed to enhance the cognitive functions necessary for academic learning and achievement. The program seeks to correct deficiencies in fundamental thinking skills, provide students with the concepts, skills, strategies, operations, and techniques necessary to function as independent learners, and to help students learn how to learn. The MOT training programmes give young people the strength to manage peer pressure, to believe in themselves and to take responsibility for their own lives and future. MOT focuses strongly on the development of self-confidence, sound values, positive attitude and behaviour, self-leadership and to resect and care for others.
