For more information on Orbis Africa visit www.orbis.org.
Orbis is a global non-profit organisation working in developing countries to reduce preventable and treatable blindness and visual impairment. Orbis Africa manages two large initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa: Child Eye Health and Strengthening Human Resources for Eye Health. Orbis always works in partnership with stakeholders from government to civil society and aligns its work with national policy. Orbis facilitates quality eye care by providing the tools, training and technology necessary for local partners to develop lasting solutions to avoidable blindness.

Orbis Africa works with local partners to develop their capacity for accessible, high-quality, sustainable eye-health services for all, regardless of their ability to pay. We do this by developing infrastructure, providing training to local doctors, nurses and community members, and conducting outreach services. Africa is the continent with the highest prevalence of blindness with an estimated 4.8 million blind and 16.6 million people living with severe to moderate visual impairment. In 2014 South Africa had 383 920 blind but the majority of the ophthalmologists work in the urban areas and the private sector whereas the citizens most at risk live in rural areas. In Ethiopia, trachoma, an entirely preventable eye disease, is partly responsible for causing blindness in nearly a million people. Our interventions improved more than 2.1 million lives. When sight is restored to people who are visually impaired, or when blindness is prevented, it doesn’t just improve the lives of individuals. People can contribute to their community helping to build a better future for their families. By working to build the resources and expertise of eye care professionals in Africa, we’re giving countless communities access to quality eye care and transforming lives in the process. For us, that is an Africa where no one ever loses their sight through preventable or treatable disease. Attend one of our fundraising events or stage an event nominating Orbis Africa as the beneficiary. The cataract surgical coverage rate for men in developing countries is up to 1.7 times higher for men than women. So, what are the barriers that stop women from receiving the help they need? Giving vision to someone who has been partially sighted or has never had vision, has a life-changing impact on the family, the community and, ultimately the economy of a country. People can contribute to their community, helping to build a better future for their families. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence of blindness and visual impairment in the world. With the skills and equipment found at even the most basic Western hospital, 80% of all eye conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa could be easily cured. According to the World Health Organisation there are currently 57 countries in crisis in Human Resources for Health and 36 of these are situated in Sub-Saharan Africa. When existing structures are relied upon in an effective way, a great many women can seek the eye health they need. When they get the help they need, preventable blindness can be stopped in its tracks.
