hello i am a freelance illustrator and surface designer living in the lovely city of cape town. frank is not my daughter’s name though, it is one of her nicknames, the origin of which is a long story. my illustration consists mostly of line drawings in pen and ink or else they are digitally rendered as many of the characters i create end up as patterns on fabric or wallpaper. on paper i prefer acrylic ink as it tends not to fade over time, unlike other inks, but i sometimes have fun with pencil crayon and chalk pencil. my style works well for children’s books and my picture book, Feeling Sheepish can be viewed here and is available online from xlibris publishers. creating cut and paste artworks is a bit like being ten again, sitting on the floor with a huge mess of papers, glue and scissors. in fact things get remarkably messy, usually because this is not the only thing i have on the go and i often have to wade my wave through piles of colours to find a sketch. my work is veering more towards pen and ink artworks which are cut out and pasted together, and onto coloured card or paper, as in the works below. the addition of pattern design to my portfolio has developed over the last few years, starting with wallpaper design and now fabric. i have won a few awards for fabric design on the american site minted, where a collection of my designs are for sale. it is incredibly satisfying taking a little character and turning it into a pattern.
