Pilates-based functional fitness in the Cape Town city bowl. Learn sound movement mechanics and apply them to your daily activities in order to improve joint strength, flexibility and alignment. We're all about teaching technique. The Science in Motion studio offers small, highly personalized classes. Take the long view and invest in your future health and fitness.

We have a scientific, analytical approach to movement and emphasise individual development. Moving well means moving with ease, fluidity and strength. It’s a feeling of being completely at home in your body, of having total freedom and total control. Developing, or rather, restoring, this kind of bodily insight is a process which sometimes takes time. At the Science in Motion studio, we’ve developed a style of teaching which uses pilates-based exercises to help you achieve this body potential for yourself. Simple exercises, when executed with focus and precision, can make a remarkable difference to your feeling of strength, control and degree of mobility. We maintain a close relationship with reputable physiotherapists and frequently collaborate with them to develop safe strengthening techniques for those of you looking for post-rehab exercise. Our style of teaching is educational, anatomical and contemporary. Advances in movement science and in our understanding of fitness principles have since necessitated the development of various styles of pilates, each of which retain the original Contrology principles to a greater or lesser degree. Classical pilates schools stick closely to the original Contrology system, teaching only the exercises described by Joseph Pilates, in the sequence he prescribed, and using only the equipment he built, according to his original specifications. Clinical pilates is a contemporary version of pilates used by clinicians, such as physiotherapists and biokineticists, often for rehabilitative purposes. As an experienced and skilled pilates practitioner, Catherine has a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of anatomy and movement mechanics. She constantly looks for creative strategies to improve the experience of her clients. Catherine began dancing at about the age of six and hasn’t stopped exploring the world of movement since then. She’s a qualified ballet and modern dance teacher, and trained as a pilates practitioner with the Pilates Academy SA, and with Body Control Pilates SA. Private clients also get to work on the pilates equipment. You'll need to do a few private or semi-private sessions before joining our group classes. As someone prone to injury due to hyper-mobility, Cath's intelligent and considered approach to pilates has restored my mobility and improved my confidence in my ability to exercise. Her hands-on manner served to educate me about anatomy which has gone a long way towards preventing further injury. A few of the mat tricks which bailed me out on the saddle: Tilting the pelvis north-ish (don’t know why but it helped the lower back), recruiting those back of the armpit muscles took pressure off the wrists and neck. Excellent training with incredible attention to detail. It's a great balance of physical challenge with the confidence that Cath does not ever push my body to the point of injury. Practical (scientific) approach to the body and movement. Cath is very personal and takes the time to make sure that you're doing things correctly.
