What you should know about Studenty

Book Store in Cape Town

Our mission is simply Teaching Students to Follow Jesus for Life.
All our other ministries and programmes are based on this conviction and shaped so as to be centred on the Word and to display lives lived under its authority.
Our core ministry is probably the small group Bible study.

The Student Y O Week events calendar is out and jam-packed with fantastic events. We asked staff and students about their Christmas wish lists and holiday plans. HUB is our Friday night get-together, where we have teaching from the Word, discussion, FOOD and fellowship. We were delighted and surprised by the range and depth of their answers: from a subscription to The Economist to a ticket to Handel’s Messiah for Easter. It is a great way to have fun with a group of people and get to know people. Hilary Mushambi (staff spouse, UCT): A good quality camera with multiple lenses and a photography course or cake decorating course and additional baking equipment for my kitchen. To rest, enjoy time with my family and think seriously about family holiday traditions. Spend good time with Family in Port Elizabeth at the beach and around the house and do some running and cycling. Fritz van der Lecq (Campus Director, UCT): Bucket loads of energy and productivity to complete at least two dissertation chapters! Faye Mathews (staff worker, UCT): Rest, an awesome place to live in Jo’burg, furniture. As a student leader, friend and disciple, Grant realised that you don’t have to be in a position of leadership to serve. So, looking back over my university years, the Y community made me aware of my need to be grounded in my faith through the Word of God. The Y has helped me become more cross-culturally aware and sensitive. Coming from a very white suburban youth background, the Y helped me appreciate and befriend students from totally different social and cultural backgrounds. To not want to embrace the reality that South Africa’s people are diverse is naïve. It is safe to say that God has impacted me through the Y in the sense that He’s shown me how to be a follower of Christ, in terms of discipleship. The Y is a space where I, for example, was able to serve in formal positions, as the Student Committee chairman for two years, but also washing dishes, stacking chairs, making coffee, and generally just being available to serve wherever needed. Leadership is not simply a case of upfront roles, but doing tasks that you don’t really want to do, it’s part of being in a community. The challenge of leadership is to encourage others to exercise their gifts and abilities in a coordinated way. Getting the opportunity to read and reflect more and to work out some of the implications for my life and service to God. I’m hoping it will be a good year for my personal growth as a Christian and getting a clearer sense of my vocation going forward.
