Over the past 31 years Suburban Pools has established itself as a leading gunite pool builder in South Africa. To get the effect, the architect designed the structure so that the water flows over all four sides into a submerged channel. To create a spectacular water falls down natural rock formations on a gently sloping site required innovative engineering and substantial gunite work. Exotic plant life and sculptured wild life provide the finishing touches to this unique domestic project. While tiled inlays outline the simple, attention is focussed on the tiled water feature and planters that were built to minimize the level difference of ground behind the pool. The pool design compliments the design of the house and features a large shallow entrance area, water feature and a separate main pool area suitable for swimming lengths. The shape is outlined with a contrasting dark tile and brick surround, the interior finished with white mosaic tiles and marble plaster. In keeping with the size of this substantial property, Joshua Architects specified a practical, 12 M long pool, ideal for swimming lengths. The design of the pool was to follow the flowing curved façade of the house and incorporate a water feature. But where do you position the pool when you have a triple story house with multiple living area’s? This required substantial structural engineering, with the both the pool and the rimflow channel shaped to follow the house contour. The pool builder’s structural engineer designed and supervised building of the support structure. The pool deck is paved with light tiles to match the living area. To maintain the light and airy atmosphere, the pool is white plastered and trimmed with blue waterline tiles, providing light blue water.
