The Silk Workshop was started in 2011 by mother and daughter team Nicky and Roxanne and their friend Lynzi who came up with the concept in order to provide aerial dance as corporate entertainment and offer training on Aerial Silks to students interested in the aerial arts. The business is now owned solely by Nicky and Roxanne who have over 30 years experience in Aerial Dance and are professional, multi-talented performing artists. Nicky was a professional figure skater in England but fell in love with the circus and swapped her passion to the aerial arts. Strong and skilled with a smile that sells every performance she delivers to perfection, she has performed around the world on various apparatus such as silks, trapeze, cradle and lyra. Roxanne was born and raised in the circus and could pull herself up on the mini trapeze suspended above her crib before she could even walk. Flexible and graceful, she combines her love of dance with her aerial skills to deliver performances so soulful and exquisite, they will move you to tears. They have performed many unique acts over the years together from a roller skating act, to hula hooping, to double silks, double lyra, acro balance and more. Since its inception, The Silk Workshop has expanded phenomenally not only offering classes in Aerial Silks but also in Aerial Hoop (lyra) and, most recently, in Trapeze and Acrobatics. The interest has also grown from not only adults wishing to learn these skills but to children as well, and The Silk Workshop now offers classes for all ages on a weekly basis at their Aerial Playground in Montague Gardens. The Silk Workshop is also an entertainment agency that provides artists for corporate events. Anything from daring aerial acts, to acrobatics, contortion and even performances with fire. They also do outreach work training circus skills to youngsters in townships around the Western Cape in order to identify new talent and offer an opportunity for them to train and find employment opportunities in the performing arts. The Silk Workshop, in conjunction with the awesome guys from SAN Circus, runs Flying Trapeze Workshops every 2 weeks at the Big Top Circus Tent in Observatory where the Trapeze rig is set up. Our first children’s Aerial Dance Birthday Celebration at our new venue was a huge success and everyone had loads of fun.
