What you should know about The The Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa
The Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa is the national leader in all types of appropriate dispute resolution. Founded in 1996, AFSA is a joint venture between organised business, the legal and accounting professions. AFSA is based in Sandton, with branches in a number of major centres throughout South Africa, and aims to provide a one-stop dispute resolution service. It offers arbitrations, mediations and a fully administered dispute resolution service in comfortable surroundings. AFSA maintains panels of experts and offers disputants a choice of rules depending on the size and complexity of the matter. AFSA has much pleasure in announcing the establishment of AFSA INTERNATIONAL, a division of AFSA, which will administer all cross-border disputes other than those falling within the purview of the China-Africa Joint Arbitration Centre. AFSA has for many years administered both domestic and international disputes in accordance with its standardised Rules. The growth in the number of international cases and the specialised needs in case administration have necessitated the creation of a separate international division. AFSA anticipates that South Africa will shortly adopt the Model Law thereby completing the necessary legal infrastructure to qualify it as a regional hub for international arbitration. The establishment of AFSA International is also intended to service the increased demand which should result. The AFSA International Panel of Arbitrators has been constituted by invitation extended to lead arbitrators throughout the world, and in particular practitioners from Europe, the United Kingdom, North America, Australia, Africa and China. AFSA itself is a well-established arbitral authority and the leading administrator of commercial and trade disputes in Southern Africa. AFSA’s founding members include the leading attorney firms in the country, many of which have a global presence. Finally, let me draw attention to the AFSA International Logo, which as you will see, is a derivative of the AFSA Logo reshaped as a globe.
