Val studied Fine Arts for seven years at the Johannesburg, East London, Port Elizabeth and Durban Art Schools. After qualifying in 1971 she travelled Europe, looking at the works of the great masters for a year. In 1977 Val took over the Modern Dance Centre in Port Elizabeth and ran it for 14 years. In 1988 Val moved to Cape Town so she could study Movement Therapy and Process Psychology. This led her to think differently about how to teach art and she began Val Greens Art Space in Working with the University of Cape Town Life Skills Dept and Health for Africa, Val gave workshops on Creativity and Stress Release for groups in large corporations and hospitals and with groups at her art studio. Throughout her working life Val has continued to paint and exhibit her art work. Whats the Point is fabulous for anyone who has tried to make a living and a life through painting and drawing. Wanda has a broader range and can be absorbed and enjoyed by children and adults. The art school teaches in a way that encourages technical proficiency along with the exploration of the individuals creativity. A local artist who has exhibited her work all over the world, Val Green has dedicated her life to exploring art in life and using it for therapy and expression to benefit the body and mind. Her art classes are intimate and many are arranged on request or in response to demand. Through different stimuli like music, myths and fairy tales and working in pencil, water colour, acrylic and oils Val teaches students of her Art School the art of expression. Val’s Art Classes combine technique with individuality and are intimately structured to enhance creative expression. The skilled calligrapher may create letters of great elegance, and the novice letters of great beauty. As calligraphers we are often trapped into the belief that beautiful writing is based on the creation of perfect letters. We all learn to read and write by means of a universal set of rules referring to the construction of letters and so, through alphabets, we communicate. Fine writing is composed of rules, measurements, geometry and spaces.
