The NNR is the national institution established by the National Nuclear Regulator Act, for the protection of the public, Act No 47 of 1999, property and environment against nuclear damage.

The mission of the NNR is to provide and maintain an effective and efficient national regulatory framework for the protection of persons, property and the environment against nuclear damage. In pursuing this mission, the NNR is striving toward realising its vision of becoming an independent world-class regulatory authority on nuclear safety. In carrying out its mandate, the NNR adheres to the values of Professionalism, Openness and Transparency, Integrity, Valuing People, Excellence, and Teamwork. These values serve as guiding principles on how the NNR reaches regulatory decisions, how it performs administrative tasks and how its employees interact with their fellow employees and other stakeholders. It is responsible for granting nuclear authorisations and exercising regulatory control related to safety over the siting, design, construction, operation, manufacture of component parts, and the decontamination, decommissioning and closure of nuclear installations; and vessels propelled by nuclear power or having radioactive material on board which is capable of causing nuclear damage. It establishes the basis for regulatory control by alluding to acceptable risk as the determinant. The legislation specifies that a holder of authorisation for any facility or activity that gives rise to radiation risks has the prime responsibility for safety and is liable for any nuclear damage caused by their facility or activities. The meeting was held under the framework of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN) and was aimed at solving communication challenges faced by member states. A significant achievement for South Africa in the global nuclear landscape. CEO Dr. Bismark Tyobeka Elected to be president of the sixth review meeting of the contrating parties under the joint convention on the safety of spent nuclear fuel management and safety of radioactive waste management. Every year for the last six years Hope School hosts a Career Expo inviting all LSEN schools (Learners with Special Educational Needs) to participate. The consecutive three year achievement of these noteworthy results symbolises a united NNR striving to uphold the rule of law, promoting accountability and adopting a zero tolerance stance on mediocrity. As part of the learner outreach programme the NNR held an information sharing exhibitionwhich is part of the stakeholder outreach at the regulatory conference. The meeting was attended by high level officials and senior technical experts. The NNR launched the first applied research and training establishment dedicated to developing essential skills demanded by South Africa’s nuclear industry, the Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Safety and Security, at the University of Pretoria in Hatfield. Representatives from thirty five organisations attended the training. An overview of the project was presente and occupational dose records upload requirements and arrangements were demonstrated. In order to test the public address system and to acquaint all tenants, personnel and neighbours with Necsa’s site emergency alarm, the alarm is activated for a short while on each first Monday of a month.
